We are living in an ageing society.
Since 1931 the number of people aged 65 and over has more than doubled. Now, 1 in 5 of us is over 60. Most of us are living much longer. Comparing 2005 and 2025 the number of over 80's will almost double and over 90's will also double.

People aged 65 years and over now use almost two thirds of general and acute hospital beds.
Ill Health Average
Men's average life expectancy of some 75 years will on average include nearly 8 years of poor health.
For women with an average life expectancy of 80 years, on average, 11 years will be in poor health.
