Worry Over Scotland's Cost Of Care

Published / Last Updated on 13/07/2002

Several charities that work in the elderly care market in England have raised concerns over the long term funding of personal care in Scotland.

Despite personal care being free up to a certain level for all in Scotland, the charities are worried that there will not be enough money to fund it in the longer term.  They fear that new sources of money will need to be found.

The fears have come based on a number of factors, especially the situation in the Netherlands where free personal care had to be removed after a number of years.  Due to the number of people requiring care, sufficient funds could not be found.

Worries have been heightened with comments from both Ireland and Wales stating that they would ideally like to introduce free care but are unable to raise taxes to do it.

With all of the controversy surrounding the free care issue, it seems to be moving further and further away from reality in England.
