Good News For Singletons

Published / Last Updated on 10/04/2002

On April 6, rules where relaxed by the Inland Revenue when people purchase annuities for protected rights monies.  What are protected rights?  For many, who have been 'contracted out of SERPS' and may or not remain contracted out of the new state second pension scheme this is good news.  Previously any annuity benefit that your bought for this portion of your pension would have had to also purchase a spouses pension - even if you do not have a spouse.  Remember the more 'bolt ons' and 'add ons' you add to your pension when you retire the lower your starting pension. This way single people will be able to obtain larger starting pensions for any protected rights element of their pension funds.  For more on pensions visit  Pensions Adviser.com.More on Protected Rights.
