Green Home Ratings Go Ahead

Published / Last Updated on 04/12/2007

Environmental ratings

Mandatory environmental ratings for new homes have been given the Government go ahead, with effect April 2008.

New homes will be rated against an environmental code and then be given a certificate to show the rating achieved.  Those not assessed against the code would be given a zero rating.

The idea of the code is to introduce a single standard that buyers can assess homebuilders against, in terms of overall sustainability.

Our view

We see this move becoming more widespread across many sectors, not just our homes.  We already have it for washing machines and freezers and now houses, what next?
