Housing Demand Exceeds Supply

Published / Last Updated on 11/11/2002

According to the House Builders Federation, new house completions are at their lowest level since 1954 with demand far exceeding supply.

A spokesman for the Federation said "the situation has been worsening for the last thirty years; it is clearly a cause of house price inflation and marks a severe crisis of supply".

Currently, around 5% of people who took part in a survey intend to move within the next year.  This has been the same for the last year.  However, two years ago, this figure was 9%.  The main reasons people want to move is for extra bedrooms.

Despite the fall in people intending to move in the next year, demand is still exceeding supply.
