Abbey Shuns Ireland

Published / Last Updated on 16/10/2002

Speculation has been on the cards recently regarding a possible merger of Abbey National and Bank of Ireland.  However, it now seems to be a no-go area with Abbey National rejecting Bank of Ireland's proposals.

Competition could be rife now as rumours that National Australia Bank have been in touch with Abbey and made a better offer.  Will Bank of Ireland let Abbey go or will they decide to up the stakes?  Whatever happens, Abbey National seem to be in trouble on the management side and their share price does nothing to instil confidence in investors.  Will they go to the highest bidder?
