Hostile Take_Over _ MAN U v Canada

Published / Last Updated on 07/01/2003

Manulife, a Canadian insurance company has launched a hostile take-over bid for Canada Life.  The company wrote to all of Canada Life's shareholders offering a windfall of around £4,000 if the take-over goes ahead.  They have until the end of February to decide but Canada Life will apparently also be writing to shareholders in mid-January.  Canada Life does have its own team of advisers but they also sell their products through independent financial advisers.  Many of the insurer's own sales team were recently sold to another firm but there is now speculation over what will happen to those advisers remaining and the future of being able to deal through independents such as ourselves.
