Norwich Union has stated that it will not be holding back insurance payouts for policyholders killed in the tsunami tragedy for the usual seven years, if a body cannot be found.
However, the company will be applying ‘ a reasonable evidence test’, to check whether someone has died, using information and evidence such as airline bookings, hotel bookings, immigration records and the use of credit cards to assess whether a payment can be made, rather than waiting seven years before a death certificate can be issued.
Our view
This is a very sensible and welcome move by NU. Let us hope that other providers follow suit.
