Critically Defined

Published / Last Updated on 15/01/2003

Following a rise in the amount of diagnosed heart attacks and cancers, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has re-defined what the definitions of these two illnesses should be following advances in medical science.

Quite simply, as medical science has developed the incidence of claims has risen.  The ABI has given insurers until May this year to adopt the new definitions.  The changes in definitions is thought to possibly increase the amount of diagnosed claims for heart attack and whereas for certain cancers such as skin and prostrate, the amount of claims may fall.

In any event, the costs for critical illness protection, which covers you for diagnosis of serious illnesses rather than death, are likely to increase to reflect these changes and increased diagnosis rather than decrease.
