Unemployment Falls for Fifth Month
by Ashley Clark, Director
Unemployment in the UK fell for the fifth month in succession.
Figures released by the office of National Statistics show that unemployment at the end of May was at 2.47 million, down 34,000.
Whilst encouraging, we suggest the figures are not as attractive as they may be. Long term unemployed (those that have been out of work for 12 months or more) rose by 61,000 to 787,000 and we also await the increase as students finish school, college or university.
In addition, Government spending cuts over the next few years will, we suggest, contribution to our estimation of an extra half million people in unemployment.
