Research by Hargreaves Lansdown has found that more than two thirds of people reply on their partner’s pensions in retirement.  In a survey of 1,300 people in May, HL found that:

  • 31% of men did not need to reply on their pensions, meaning 69% do.
  • 21% of women did not need to rely on their partner’s pensions.
  • 19% of couples admitted that have similar pensions funds and wealth to their partners.

What this tells us is that in this age of equality and couples working together and planning their wealth and pension distribution, most couples rely on each other for financial secuirty.

It also tells us that single people are less likely to be financially secure in retirement.

Greater education is required at an early age to instill the need for saving and investing earlier to plan for both short, medium and long term needs.
