Sausage Tax

by Ashley Clark, Director

A story on the BBC news website suggests that the Lincolnshire Sausage Association is looking to secure Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) for the Lincolnshire sausage.

They are funding their bid to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) which, if approved, will then move on to the application to the European Commission with a Sausage Tax.

The Lincolnshire sausage is something of an iconic sausage, much in the same way as Stilton cheese must be from Stilton and Melton Mowbray pies from Melton Mowbray.

The Lincolnshire Sausage Association claims that the majority of Lincolnshire sausages are not made in Lincolnshire, and being born in Lincolnshire myself, I can confirm most retail Lincolnshire sausages taste nothing like a true Lincolnshire sausage.

The Sausage Tax is a voluntary tax that the association is looking for local butchers and retailers to contribute towards the costs of legal advice to get protected status.
