DWP Benefits Review

by Ashley Clark, Director

Spending on benefits in the UK is to have a full scale review in a bid to cut government spending and ensure that benefits are paid to the right people and those that perhaps are ‘playing the system’ to be caught out.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg suggested that benefits to well off “middle England” families such as child benefit and winter fuel allowance for wealthy pensioners may be cut or frozen.

This is in addition to a general review and expansion of programs to get benefits to people that need them and to wean people off benefits who do not.

People who are disabled or need our help should get all that they need.  Those that are able in some shape or form should contribute, even if you are on job seekers allowance you should at least have to give up 1 day per week to contribute to society rather than sit in the pub all day or watch TV.

One simple solution we have always supported is for people to earn their benefits - by either doing community service or studying or re-training in back to work schemes.  Even just picking up litter or cleaning up graffiti or visiting the little old lady around the corner or fetching her shopping.  All good contributions to a better Britain.  Those that choose not to contribute to society should not benefit from society.  At minimum wage rates for benefits, this means that many would only have to contribute say 8-10 hours a week.

Sweeping statements we know, but we all know and see many people who do absolutely nothing and fund drink, drugs or cigarettes from benefits.  You only have to watch an episode of the Jeremy Kyle show to see a few examples of what we mean.
