Private health care is similar to the NHS according to a report by the Healthcare Commission.
Standards of patient care in private hospitals are similar to those in NHS Trusts. Six per cent of NHS trusts were found to be failing standards while 5 per cent of independent healthcare establishments did not meet five or more of the government’s national minimum standards.
Sixty three per cent of establishments throughout the private sector met the government’s national minimum standards, compared to only 50 per cent the year before.
Our view
Given that most private healthcare employees were trained by the NHS, is it any wonder that standards are similar. In addition, is it not the Government that sets standards anyway, so you would expect both private and public health operations to have the same healthcare standards. It is just that one has a leather chesterfield in your room, the other has a stack of plastic chairs.
