Research from Fidelity International has shown that more than 40% of people do not know the allocation split of their investment portfolio, despite one in five having more than £50,000 in investment funds and share based accounts.
The survey found that 42% did not know how their savings were divided between equities, bonds, cash and property, and one in ten had no idea at all about the asset allocation of their portfolio.
When asked how much they would ideally like in each of the asset classes, 35% were unsure, but estimated that 29% should be invested in property, 27% in cash, 19% in equities, 16% in bonds and a further 13% in alternative investments.
Our view
This is not surprising. Our experience would suggest the position is even worse. Many people will also not understand the taxation rules or even the type of investment they have and for others who own shares, we suggest that over 90% never read the yearly accounts report and are basically "gambling" that their investments will gain growth.
