The proposals to increase in the state pension age, to age 68 by 2046, should apply to everyone, regardless of the industry in which they work. However, civil service workers, who joined before 2005, will still be able to retire at age 60.
This is currently being debated in the House of Lords, with regard to the fairness of it all. Lord Turner believes that the pension rules are unfair, while Lord McKenzie, believes that it is a fair system and the increase in the pension age will work and allow people to enjoy their retirement.
Our view
What a shock! It is always civil servants who do not have to give up rights. Government employees looking after Government employees. By failing to address pension arrangements for civil service workers it is seen as acceptance of the problem and the gap in retirement ages.
