Increases to Paternity Leave

by Ashley Clark, Director

The Government has announced that paternity leave will be increased to six months from April 2011.

The aim is for mother’s to take the first 26 weeks’ maternity leave and then transfer the last six months maternity leave to the father and then return to work.

The idea is that both parents spend quality time with their child after birth, rather than just the mother.

The current rules is that father’s can take two weeks Statutory Paternity Leave within 56 days of birth.  The rate of Statutory Paternity Pay is £123.06 per week.  Employers do not have to pay this for the full six months – just any weeks that overlap with the mother’s 39-week Statutory Maternity Pay period.
