A report from the Royal College of Nursing has revealed that nurses are being forced to change their careers because their low salaries are stopping them getting onto the property ladder.
The Government's Key Worker Living Scheme has been helping a large number of nurses to buy homes, but is seen as being an unrealistic approach to solving the housing problem, as there are still many nurses who fall just short of the requirements for the financial support.
Areas of the country are also missing out as the scheme, as it excludes workers outside the Southeast as well as those employed outside the NHS, and overseas nurses who are in the UK on work permits.
Our view
If the Government and Country wants good health care then we need to change our attitude towards nurses. Maybe the new proposed Government/Local Authority/Private Company shared ownership property schemes announced in last year's budget will help people on the ladder?
