Landlords Fail To Register For Licences

Published / Last Updated on 24/07/2006

Thousands of landlords who have failed to apply for licences under new 'houses in multiple occupation' regulations may face fines of up to £20,000.

The warning has been issued by the National Landlords Association, which has claimed that some local authorities have received applications for fewer than 5% of rented properties that require a licence.

The regulations, which came into force in April this year, set a three-month deadline for submission of applications.  The association has said that 'Apart from the £20,000 fine that can be imposed, in extreme cases, landlords can also be subject to a management order.'  They have urged all landlords to take steps to ensure that they understand and are compliant with the new rules.
