Holiday Entitlement Increases

Published / Last Updated on 02/10/2007

Many of may not be aware but on Monday the number of annual days leave an employee is allowed to take is going rose, from 20 days per year to 28 days per year by 2009.

The increase will take place in stages, the first of which will be in October 2007, with an increase to 24 days and 28 days in April 2009.  The inclusion of bank holidays in the annual allowance is allowed.

However, despite the increase in the number of days allowed, it would seem that the United Kingdom is still at the bottom of the table compared with our European counterparts.  In Germany, employees are granted 24 days annual leave and an additional 10 to 15 days paid public holidays, and in Belgium the 20 days annual leave is in addition to the 10 days paid public holidays.

Our view

Many employers will already offer the employees the required holiday already.  In simple terms, the minimum for a person who works 5 days a week is 4 weeks plus 8 Bank and Public holidays.  We
suggest many already offer this.
