Fraudulent Expense Claims
Business Link has warned employers to be alert to the scope of fraudulent expense claims following a survey by Travelodge which found that 18 per cent of UK workers admitted to fiddling expenses totalling an estimated loss for UK firms of £1bn annually. With the average fraudulent claim being £204 a year. Common frauds included adding extra mileage to travel expenses, asking for extra taxi receipts and using them to claim back false taxi transport and taking clients to cheap restaurants then filing an expensive personal restaurant bill instead. Lavish expense claims included paying for lapdancers, luxury holidays, a new motorbike and dancing lessons.
Our view
This is a matter for HM Revenue and Customs. They need to remind firms that an allowable expense is incurred solely for the purpose of earning business profits and remind staff of the same.
