Who is entitled to redundancy pay?

To be entitled to a redundancy payment a person needs to have worked for their employer continuously for two years.  

If you started employment under the age of 18, any service until your 18th birthday will not count towards the two years continuous service.  

People that may not be entitled to redundancy payments can include:

  • Some directors
  • Contractors
  • Self employed
  • Some fixed term contract workers
  • If dismissed from employment after age 65
  • If dismissed after reaching normal retirement age
  • Members of the Armed Forces
  • An apprentice not taken on after the apprenticeship ends
