Energy Firm Payment Method Charges.
Government research has found that people paying their energy bills via cash or cheque normally pay more than those with an automatic payment method.
Energy companies are being accused of not being fair to those who cannot or do not pay their bills via an automatic method. The research showed that those who do not use automatic payments, generally pay £114 more per year.
This has led to almost 200 MPs signing a motion for the House of Commons calling for the regulator OfGem to investigate these claims.
Some energy companies have responded to these claims explaining that these payment methods cost more to process.
Robert Halfman a Conservative MP wants a cap to be added to energy bills. The cap would allow for a maximum of £24 per year on charges. This campaign has reached Prime Minister David Cameron who has issued the order for officials to investigate the charging on payment methods.
