Doctors Reports _ Price Rise

Published / Last Updated on 14/09/2006

The Association of British Insurers has sanctioned an increase in the amount paid to General Practitioners in return for medical reports about patients.

The Association of British Insurers said that the increase in the fee was an attempt to obtain a more professional approach from doctors.

The increase that was agreed between the Association of British Insurers and the British Medical Association means that from September 2006 a doctors report will cost £74.70 and a medical examination will cost £82.20. The current costs are £70.50 and £77.50 respectively.

Our view

We, and many others have experienced the ‘can’t be bothered’ attitude from many doctors. This is not good for their reputation and it is not good for their patients looking for insurance. Many have to resort to making appointments to force the doctor to complete the report whilst they are in front of them.

This takes up a doctor's time for people who need to be seen medically and makes everyone’s life more stressful.

In this day and age of computers it would be far better to get practice managers to complete the reports from patient notes and just get the GP to check and sign the reports.
