According to new research from BUPA, access to clean hospitals is the most important reason for people wanting to take out private medical insurance (PMI). The study of 1,000 people found that NHS waiting lists and faster access to diagnosis continue to be important reasons for buying PMI, while the perceived idea of better quality medical treatment and seeing the same consultant from start to finish are the other major factors.
It found that MRSA and general hospital hygiene remained at the top of peoples' concerns, while women in particular worry about cancer, while men are more concerned about heart disease.
The survey shows that the majority of people feel healthy and fit for their age, a third of people take health and food supplements, nearly a third take exercise every day and most are happy with their weight.
One in ten respondents already had PMI, 40% through an employer, and 60% with a personal policy.
Our view
You can umderstand with people concerned for their health that they are prepared to pay for perceived 'cleaner' hospital care.
