Bank Wrongfully Imprisoned Customer.
A customer of HSBC bank has won her civil case against HSBC after she was unlawfully imprisoned and harassed with hundreds of phone calls. Judge Tacey Cronin ruled that HSBC had failed to abide by its contractual obligations and have ordered the bank to cancel her £2,070 overdraft.
In a report to the BBC, Josephine Lewis from Wootton Bassett had visited her HSBC branch in Wootton Bassett in 2008 to complain about the overdraft fees the bank had been charging her. When she became upset and wanted to leave the interview room, which had been locked from the inside, the branch manager blocked her way. Also during 2008 and 2009, she received hundreds of phone calls from HSBC, some of which were abusing and threatening.
According to Stephen Hone, from the campaign website penaltycharges.co.uk, which helped Miss Lewis, this case shows that legislation is needed to stop unlawful bank charges.
