5m Workers Earn Below Standard of Living.

According to KPMG research, five million workers are earning below what is known as a living wage, in short a wage that you could afford to support yourself without needing two incomes into the home.
This is different to the minimum wage, which is the Government set legal minimum wage based upon ages.  The living wage current stands at £8.30 per hour in London and £7.20 per hour for the rest of the UK.

Our view
Difficult call here.  One in five employee earning below £7.20 per hour.
But compare this to Spain with 25% unemployment.  Employers struggle just as much as employees.  Of course we all want to earn more, but there is a cross over between experienced staff, work flexibility, lack of responsibility or indeed the need to deliver results.  If you gave people the choice of work or no work but a living wage for the remaining workers, most would opt for a job and below a living wage.
