Work for Dole Proposals

Under proposals put forward by the government, people who have been out of work for more than two years could be forced to work full-time in the community.  The welfare reform green paper suggests that those who refuse to seek jobs or train will be required to tidy parks, clean graffiti or help in old people’s homes in order to qualify for support.  Under the “work for dole” programme, which is similar to schemes in the US, unemployed people could have their benefits stopped for six months if they do not co-operate in looking for a job.

Drug addicts will be forced to admit their problem and embark on treatment before they can receive benefits.  Single parents with children aged seven or more will also be expected to seek work.  James Purnell, the work and pensions secretary, described the plans as “revolutionary”.  They will apply to all the 4.5 million people on out-of-work benefits, but are expected to impact most on those on jobseekers allowance.
