Take Home Pay Down 5 Per Cent

Take Home Pay Down 5 Per Cent.

Research by BBC Panorama has revealed that the average employee takes home £1,088 a year less than two years ago when the sum is adjusted for inflation.  At the start of 2011, the average British worker earned £20,149, which in real terms is a fall of 5 per cent from what they were earning in the middle of the recession.

When inflation is taken into account, average pay from the start of 2009 when the recession was in full swing has dropped.  The research also shows that if you allow for inflation, the average take-home pay is lower today than it was in 2004.

Due to the fear of unemployment, people have been put off asking for more than a modest pay rise, according to some economists.
