According to the British Chambers of Commerce, employers are concerned with the possible change that will allow the Government to set employees retirement ages, not the employers.
Director General of the British Chambers of Commerce, David Frost said: 'Having a retirement age is the best of both worlds. Employers know when someone is due to retire but can still have the flexibility to agree with individual employees who want to work beyond that age'.
Our View
The Government has set up a task force to look at the area of age discrimination. Retirement ages obviously fall into this area. Mr Frost is right in what he says, employers need to have the right to set retirement ages and then have the right to amend them, if required. We also understand though that retirement ages are big news at the moment, because of pensions.
Basically, whatever the Government decides will be right for the Government, not the employer.
