According to research from the asset manager ABN Amro, attitudes to investment vary considerably depending on the gender of the investor.
They have also found that the source of the information and where people get their advice differs according to whether the investor is male or female.
Almost a fifth of male respondents claimed the main reason for making investment decisions was the anticipation and excitement of the experience. This was compared to just five per cent of women.
Women seem to be so cautious that two thirds of those surveyed said that they seek advice from a financial adviser or institution before making decisions. The same amount of men rely on the internet to keep them up-to-date on the investment market, but women are more likely than men to rely on recommendations from friends and family.
Performance is the most important reason a particular fund is chosen, a third of men take into account the management fee before making a decision, while only 10% of women said that the charges were important.
