New research from Clerical Medical has found that men spend more time in the workplace than their female colleagues. The study showed that men work overtime for 4.2 years of their lives, compared with womens 2.6 years. In total, it is estimated that people in Britain work an average of 3.5 years overtime, which is the equivalent of £80,000 in wages, adding up to an annual figure of 186 hours or 25 days each. Around two-thirds of women and half of men do not get paid for the overtime that they work.
Our view
Whether we like it or not, it generally falls to women to be home on time to look after children, keep the home running and prepare meals. In addition, it is more likley in the event of a separation that a woman will take main responsibility for the children. These figures on overtime are therefore, unsurprising.
