Life Cover For People With HIV

Published / Last Updated on 29/08/2002

The Association of British Insurers is to revise its current code of practice for life insurance and critical illness cover on HIV.

The ABI is currently engaged in preliminary discussions with doctors' groups, IFAs and charities.

Its current code of practice was last revised in 1994.  Advances in the treatment of HIV means that deaths from AIDS-related conditions have dropped to currently around 400 people a year.

Insurance companies have varying procedures and questionnaires when dealing with an applicant with HIV.

Hopefully, following the review, procedures may become standardised.  A spokesman for the ABI said that they are looking at how gay men, world travellers and Africans get life insurance and with what exclusions and any new statement of practice will have a wider coverage area.
