Law Change Encourage House Extensions

Published / Last Updated on 11/12/2007

Planning Reform Bill

Under new regulation unveiled in the recent Planning Reform Bill, the Government has introduced revised volume allowances for lofts and rear extensions on properties.

On detached properties lofts may now be up to 50 cubic metres without requiring planning permission, while the limit on terraced properties is 40 cubic metres.  Ground floor extensions can now be up to 70 cubic metres for detached properties and 50 cubic metres for terraced houses.

Our view

In times of higher interest rates and property value decline, people tend to revert to improving property anyway, so we see this Bill as a good one to assist both development of new, affordable housing as well as helping those who wish to build extensions.
