Landlords, via the National Landlords Association, have launched a campaign against tenancy renewal fees, calling for them to be abolished. Landlords believe that when a landlords renews a tenancy contract it should be exempt from the fee, which is charged by letting agents for sourcing tenants.
Vice-chairman of the National Landlords Association, John Socha believes it is unacceptable that when a letting agent is renewing a contract for 12 months for the same tenant, they should have to pay up to 11 per cent in commission.
Estate Agents have fought back maintaining that they earn their fee in the years following the signing of contacts.
Our view
We disagree with landlords as they would not even be aware of the client unless the letting agent had passed the client to them. We assume the tenant is a client of the letting agent. It is like saying to a bank, well I gave you my money and you paid interest this year and you then continuing to expecting interest, i.e. the fee for being able to use your money, in the next year. Surely not.
