Labour Housing Plans In Spotlight

Published / Last Updated on 14/10/2007

Housing plans revealed by Prime Minister Gordon Brown, to build three million new homes on Government brown build has been criticised by the Conservative party.

The Conservative party claim that the new plans could lead to unsustainable urban sprawl.  The South-East Regional Assembly has recently lodged a request to build 32,000 homes in the region, however the Conservatives believe that this would lead to green belt development.

The Department for Communities and Local Government defended the recommendations, saying that it is an independent request and that the priority land for development is brown belt.  They say there is no need to review any green belt areas.

Our view

Whilst we welcome building on brown belt land, we suggest that:

  • There is not enough Brown Belt land to build 3 million homes
  • Statistics from the Office of Fair Trading indicates 29 per cent of clients are not happy with their new-build properties

We suggest the figures are government spin and we will not have the required number of new build properties.
