Kennedy Suggests Dump State Pension

Published / Last Updated on 29/11/2005

Charles Kennedy, Leader of the Liberal Democrats has recently revealed his own solution to the pensions crisis, by proposing to get rid of the state pension, reduce means tested benefits and launching a Citizens' Pension.

The party have said that the Citizens pension would be a universal scheme that would be paid at £109.45 per week, instead of the current basic state pension of £82.05.

This proposal is almost the same as that called for by the National Association of Pension Funds. They have backed the recently leaked information from the Turner Report, that says that the state pension age needs to be increased to 67, but plans to leave a generation gap, imposing a 25-year lead in time before anyone is affected, which protects those over 40.
