How Rosy Will Your Future Be?

Published / Last Updated on 14/02/2002

Maybe not as pink as you think!  The results of a survey into employees views on retirement was launched last week by Towers Perrin, a firm of management consultants.  Apparently 90 out of 100 people thought that they would have a stable retirement, thinking that their pensions would pay out around 50% of their current income.  Are they saving enough now to provide this in the future?  Are you?

However, even though 84 people thought they understood their pensions, more than 33 could not confirm what their employer was paying into their plan.  Is their employer actually paying anything in?Over three quarters of the people surveyed believed that their employer had a right to provide for them in retirement.  How many employers actually do this these days?  Around a third of people did not want to bother saving into pensions because they thought they could rely on State pensions.

Did you know that the Basic State pension is £72.50 per week?  Would you want to live on this?  The Labour MP Frank Field spoke on the day the survey was launched and said that "people must understand that pension provision from the State has changed since the 1950's".  This is true and people really need to plan for their future, whatever the amount of saving.
