High House Prices Cause Binge Drinking _ Boffin

Published / Last Updated on 27/10/2005

A professor of organisational psychology and health at Lancaster University Management School is claiming high property prices are to blame for the amount of binge drinking among 20 - 35 year olds.

He believes whereas ten years ago, this age group would have already bought a home, nowadays university debts and high house prices mean that they can't afford to or are reluctant to get into debt, and because they don't have mortgages to pay back, they have more disposable income to buy alcohol.

Many are also living at home with their parents for longer, which means they tend to socialise outside the home and spend their wages in pubs instead of mortgage repayments.

Our view

Difficult to argue with.  It must have a contributory factor.   You know all those depressed 'twenty somethings' who have the latest mobile telephone each year, holiday in Goa, snowboard in Switzerland, drink half fat - unleaded - latte's each morning from Cafes's with a muffin, and eat out all the time and ................save absolutely nothing!

People want too much, too soon these days with no effort.
