Free Care In Old Age _ No Chance!

Published / Last Updated on 26/08/2005

Hopes of free personal care for the elderly have been destroyed by the Government, in an announcement to the health select committee on continuing care. They believe that this move would be too expensive, costing an estimated £8.4 billion over the lifetime of the current parliament.

Most of the chaos surrounding care funding is because of the lack of information available concerning funding when the need for care arises. The most common areas of misunderstanding were around whether the local authority or the individual would have to pay for care, assessments for NHS care, and the availability for state funding for the first 12 weeks of residency in a care home, which should be available to all without means testing.

Our view

Difficult nut to crack this one.  Those that can afford to pay will pay, those that have bothered to save and bought homes etc will technically have to pay by selling their homes, those that have not bothered to save get care for free. There is something wrong with this country.
