Employers Stopping Giving References

Around ninety per cent of small business owners and managers have stopped writing traditional references for former staff due to their fear of legal action, according to a survey carried out by Employment Law Advisory Services. The report found that one in five said that they would refuse to act as referees completely for ex-employees, irrespective of whether they were good workers.  Only 69% of those polled said that they would only confirm a former employees position, history and number of absences.
