Care Fees Costs Cap 5 Year Delay

Care Fees Costs Cap 5 Year Delay.

The Care and Support Minister, Alistair Burt, has announced today that the care fees costs cap will be delayed.

This care fees costs cap was originally set at £72,000 for vulnerable adults, by that we mean disabled adults and the over 65s, and was due to start in April 2016.

Mr Burt has confirmed that the care fees costs will now be delayed until April 2020.

Again, this is another stealth tax of sorts. By delaying the introduction of the cap, the local authority and therefore the government will not be forced into a position of covering additional care costs when the £72,000 limit is reached.

The government claim that they are postponing the care fees costs cap to enable all interested parties more time to develop their systems to cope with the new rules.

Whilst we welcome capping of care fees costs for all we can only assume that this promise was looking too expensive for the government to keep.

We sincerely hope the April 2020 deadline will be honoured and maybe this is a political bomb being left for any future government e.g. Labour, given that the next general election will likely be in May 2020.
