Calls For Goverment Funding On Social Care

Published / Last Updated on 25/05/2006

Financial Advisers have told the government that means testing for elderly people who need help with care like washing, dressing and cleaning must end, and that a minimum level of social care must also be paid for by the state.

The review has suggested a partnership model in which a minimum state funded package is topped up by personal contributions matched by the state, instead of the current system, in which those with assets of more than £20,500 have to pay for personal care, and in many cases, been forced to sell their homes to pay for it.

Our view

Asking for state funded support for 'social care' is not likely to happen until pensioners become the biggest voting group in around 10 years.  Therefore, for the current time expect the system to favour those who have no savings and penalise those who have saved.
