Build On Greenbelt Land To Meet Demand

Published / Last Updated on 27/09/2007

Research conducted by the Social Market Foundation, indicates that the use of greenbelt land to build houses on is something that needs to be considered.  The report suggests that brownfield sites, which are currently being used, will only provide enough space for one million homes.

This leaves a shortfall of 2 million homes of the promised 3 million that will be built by the year 2020.  The report states that although brownfield land is the preferred place to build, we will run out.

Our view

Baroness Andrews, housing and planning minister is adamant that we are able to build the number of homes that we need and still protect the environment and our green spaces.  We suggest this is not true.  The Social Housing scheme will fall short, as most Government promises do.  #
