British Middle-Class Numbers Fall

According to a report by AXA, declining spending power has hit the number of people who can accurately describe themselves as middle-class.  The report warned that to fit the definition of middle Britain, people must now earn on average in the 75 per cent to 95 per cent of the population’s income bracket.  The report concludes the average annual family income to meet the definition of middle-class is £64,000.

The report said Disposable income levels have increased, but middle Britain’s spending power has dropped thanks to the high levels of inflation in essential goods and services such as fuel, food and drink and heating.
