Britannia and Co-op to Merge

It has been a long time rumoured and negotiations have continued but finally announcements have been made that two leading mutual companies (i.e.  owned by their members Britannia Building Society and Co-operative Financial Services will be merging.

The merger requires a change in the law in the UK allowing mutuals to merge and will see the new group being called The Co-Operative Group and members of the Britannia will automatically become members of the Co-op.
