Britains Pay The Cost of Time Off Work

Published / Last Updated on 14/02/2007

A survey recently conducted by Standard Life has found that nearly six million people had lost a combined £31.65billion through illness or injury.

The survey randomly selected 1,000 people to question and found that 58per cent of the people they interviewed had been absent from work for over a month, and 17per cent said they had not been to work for over a year. When they were asked how they managed financially, 8 per cent said that they had insurance in place to help them, 34 per cent had borrowed money and the majority of people, and 38per cent said that they had struggled along.

Our view

Sickness and illness is a difficult thing. Britain has one of the highest sickness rates in the World, amongst public sector workers. We wonder why? A good sickness insurance scheme is essential but it can also lead to problems.
