Bank Fined for Fax Errors
The Bank of Scotland (originally part of HBOS and now part of Lloyds Banking Group) has been fined £75,000 by the Information Commissioner for repeatedly sending faxes to the wrong people and therefore disclosing personal information.
Bank statements, mortgage applications and more have been sent to the wrong people over a number of years.
Comment
Human error dictates that we all make mistakes.
This fine really is for repeated mistakes. In short, the bank has likely failed to put adequate systems and controls in to ensure that personal information it is handling and sending is being sent to the correct people.
All people, whether you are a business or consumer have a duty to protect your private data. Even consumers should be mindful to ensure that your mobile phone has a PIN number to ensure that access to not just your data but your friends via social media etc. is protected.
