The Inland Revenue's £171m finance system NIRS2 has caused yet more havoc for pensioners and would be pensioners. In yet another complaint about the system, it has failed to issue reminders to people to pay national insurance contributions meaning that credit towards state and other ancillary benefits may not be accruing for tax payers.
Our view
The Revenue say that it is not a legal requirement to issue National Insurance reminders - this stinks. It may not be a legal requirement but there is certainly a moral one. Whilst most people who work in finance will be aware of NI requirements and shortfalls, the majority of the population will not be and will be totally unaware that they are missing out on building up state benefits.
With the resources of UK PLC and £171m spent, heads should role if a system is failing the people who have had to pay for it - the public!
