50 Per Cent of UK Contribute Nothing to Tax Burden.

The UK population for 2012 stands at just over 69m.

Figures released by Grant Thornton, a national accountancy practice, suggest that with the gradual reduction in the higher rate tax threshold (40%) there are now 4.13m people that actually pay 60% of the UK’s total tax burden.

We decided to take a look at population figures in the UK from the Office for National Statistics.

What these figures tell us is that:

  • There are 64m adults in the UK and around 29m workers in the UK.
  • 14% of tax payers in the UK pay 60% of the tax
  • 6% of the population pays 60% of the tax burden
  • 25m adults pay 40% of the tax burden, 4m adults pay 60% of the tax.
  • 35m adults contribute nothing to the UK tax burden. That is over half the population.
